A “Not So Bad” World

As I’m writing this post, I’m catching up on watching “COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey” on Hulu. While I was watching, a thought came to my head. The fact that this show is still on television means that there is hope. This could have easily been a part of the scrap pile of FOX shows that don’t show positive results after a few episodes, but Cosmos averages out a little over 4 Million viewers per episode so far across its current run. In a world where television is overruled by drama, I find myself asking “How & Why?”

I’m seeing that beyond the Seth McFarlane name attachment, the Alan Silvestri composition or the entertaining animations, people genuinely have a high curiosity about why the world works the way it does, want to be taught something new and are willing to take time out of their day to learn it. We are choosing to give a show like “Cosmos” our attention, & I think that’s amazing.

I thought at one point that education, learning, and inspiration through entertainment became undesired by the masses a while ago, something to be admired, but not taken seriously. Recently however, I’ve seen that I’m increasingly becoming wrong, & I’m proud of that fact. I love to see shows like “Cosmos” &  movies such as “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” become commercially successful in the midst of big name hero movies, reality television, & shows commentating on funny home videos.

Please don’t misunderstand me or call me a pessimist, I love a great action movie as much as the next person. I’ll be at a theater watching Dawn of the Planet of the Apes & Transformers: Age of Extinction on day one along with everybody else. But for someone like me, seeing education succeed lets me know that we’re not completely engrossed in someone else’s life, wondering who doesn’t like who, or anything unnecessary that we seem to love giving our attention to. I’m tired of television being dominated by “Reality Shows”. Everyone has a reality show now, & networks apparently don’t seem to mind making room for more. What’s even worse, we eat all of it up. Week after week, day after day.

I’m ready for the influx of brain enhancing entertainment. I want to see this category thrive, for more creators to show that we can learn something and enjoy it, & for more viewers to see what happens when you take your mind to an invigorating place and learn something that you never knew, to make you want to do things that you never thought was possible.

Care to share some thoughts on the subject? How do you view the topic of education and inspiration through entertainment? What direction do you see it going? Love to hear what you have to say!

Thank You for listening,
